Katerina Vaiou is an accomplished musician and composer from Athens, Greece, who loves to experiment with many different musical styles. She is especially interested in cinematic, theatrical, and soundtrack music. "Meditation Stories" is a meditation album she released in 2020. It includes eight relaxation tracks featuring minimal piano and ethnic sounds.
When asked what her approach was for making "Meditation Stories," she explained that she tries to have an open mind when she writes. She doesn't want to be stuck just in one genre. Variety is everything for her and she believes we must appreciate "difference" of any kind. This includes music, people, and everything around us. Katerina tries to put forth a message through her music that we must end racism and learn to live with love for one another. Her music is a mirror of who she is, and the only way she can express her true feelings.
The opening track "Quiet River" begins the album in full relaxation mode with eastern sounding instrumentation. It builds slowly as interlaced melodies are gently introduced. The song develops in a calm and soothing way which establishes the main theme of the record.
Next up, "Indian Fever" starts out with spacey synth pads, coupled with an exotic middle eastern sitar melody. A futuristic, groovy bass synth is introduced next before a Bonhamesque drum beat kicks the song into full gear. You can close your eyes and imagine taking a magic carpet ride in a dream-like trance before Katerina's chanting vocals close out the track.
"Just A Piano Story" is a beautiful piano-only composition that brings the vibe back down to a state of total relaxation. Katerina's musical and compositional skills are on full display here.
Track four, "Alternative Bossa" is one of the most adventurous tracks on the album. It grows with an intensity that sounds cinematic. This song features a wide variety of instruments highlighted by an electric guitar solo.
The next two tracks, "As You Were Leaving," and "Meditation," are meditation tracks that further establish the overall theme of the album. Both are very intricate compositions that highlight Katerina Vaiou's mastery of this genre. She has a unique ability to create music that is interesting, yet calming and meditative.
Piano is the featured instrument on the second to last track, "Summer Collapses Into Fall." Once again, Katerina's musicianship shines through. This composition flows beautifully and sounds like something you would hear in an Oscar-winning movie soundtrack.
The closing track, "Descalzos en la Arena" translates to "Barefoot in the Sand" in English. Mixing Spanish and Eastern sounds, this is the only song on the album where vocals are prominently featured, and they don't disappoint. Undoubtedly the most unique sounding track in this collection, it highlights the diversity in Katerina Vaiou's music. She has a wonderful ability to seamlessly blend genres to create her own sound.
"Meditation Stories" is available now on all streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Youtube.
