Q&A with Sofia Werner
Nov. 2, 2021
Where did you grow up and where do you call home now?
I was born in Mexico City, Mexico and lived there for 8 years, although now I live in Atlanta, Georgia, I still consider Mexico my TRUE home.
How long have you been making music?
I have been making music for as long as I can remember, I was always the first one to sit down during music time in daycare, I have always been the one to get the lead in plays and solos in choir. The first song I released came out in 2019 when I was 15. I have boxes and piles of journals full of songs that I have been writing since I learned how to write (BONUS: they’re all pink!)
In what genre of would you categorize your music?
I would categorize as pop with a subtle R&B beat.
Are you professionally trained or a self-taught musician?
I have been professionally and classically trained in music. I began taking lessons in Mexico for piano, voice, and guitar, when I was five years old. When I moved to Atlanta, I began working with Jan Smith Studios to bring my visions and music to life. I also trained at Berklee School of Music for 5 weeks over the summer of 2019. During the pandemic, although I could not get to the studio to record my music, I never stopped writing and creating new songs.
How many singles have you released? What can you tell me about your upcoming release "Lost"?
I have written and released 3 singles with the fourth one coming November 5. "Lost" is about being so in love that you can’t imagine your life without that person. People and feelings always spark up my inspiration for my music. This is my favorite song of mine that I have written and released, there will be a lyric video following it! I consider this song a lot better than my other ones and you can definitely see my growth as a person.
What made you decide to become a solo musician as opposed to being part of a group?
I decided to go at it alone because it has never crossed my mind to do it with someone else. I have always been a very independent person and I like stuff done my way. I have always achieved the dreams that I have dreamed of without an help. I feel like with me, working with other artists as a group would hold me back from everything I know I can be.
Who are some other music artists you have been compared to?
I have been compared to Dua Lipa, Adele, Olivia Rodrigo, and Billie Eilish.
Who would you like to collaborate with the most?
Miley Cyrus
Is there a hidden meaning in any of your songs?
My song “Y” is named after my ex-boyfriend and everything in the song is true, no facts twisted.
What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Work hard, don’t look back, and laugh at everyone and everything that tried to bring you down.
What's next for you?
I’m just letting life take me! Hopefully I’ll have a few new songs out by then.
